3 hurt, 1 trapped in Cebu mine collapse
CEBU – Three miners were hurt while one still remains trapped after a coal mine collapsed in Barangay Dungga, Danao City, Cebu on Saturday, reports said.
Among those injured were Ruben Malabago, Cidro Bakang and Ranil Villanueva, who were immediately taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
Meanwhile, a search and rescue operation is still being conducted, as of press time, to save 22-year-old Melvin Landera, who remains trapped inside the mine.
According to another miner identified as Eduardo Maying, they were doing logging operations inside the tunnel when they heard Landera scream that the the area was about to collapse.
“He (Melvin) noticed it first, he shouted to inform us, but he was not able to run because the soil already eroded," Maying said.
Maying said he was able to hold Landera’s hand and tried to help him out of the tunnel, but he could not retrieve him because he was covered with soil and rocks.
Barangay Dungga chairman Dulcesimo Alerta Jr. said this was not the first time an accident like this happened in the mine.
The owner of the mine, however, refused to comment about the accident.
Families of the victims have called out to the mine owner for assistance, hoping that Seri Mining and Virlo Construction would shoulder the medical expenses of the victims.
A representative of the mining company meanwhile promised that they will shoulder all the expenses of the wounded miners.
