Rebels torch schoolrooms in Masbate: military
MANILA, Philippines - Suspected communist rebels torched an elementary school in a far-flung village in Masbate province, the military said Tuesday.
Maj. Harold Cabunhoc, spokesman of the Philippine Army's 9th Infantry Division, said the school in Barangay Gaib, Dimasalang town was torched by at least 10 suspected members of the New People's Army.
Cabunhoc said the armed rebels were seen leaving the school before the rooms went on fire. At least 3 schoolrooms were gutted by the fire.
He said empty gasoline containers were recovered near the gutted schoolrooms.
Cabunhoc said an Army team has been dispatched to go after the suspected rebels.
Meanwhile, head teacher Edna Cabintoy said the incident displaced a total of 248 pupils. She said classes would continue in makeshift schoolrooms to be placed under trees within the village. With a report from Noel Alamar, radio dzMM
