MANILA, Philippines - Two earthquakes struck of Batanes and Masbate Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The Phivolcs said a magnitude 4.9 quake struck 48 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes at 10:08 a.m.

The quake was shallow in depth and was tectonic in origin, the agency said.

It was felt at Intensity 3 in Basco, Batanes. Phivolcs said aftershocks may happen.

A magnitude 4.5 also struck 18 kilometers north off Cataingan, Masbate at 12:30 p.m.

The quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Cataingan, Masbate; Intensity 3 sa Palanas, Masbate; Intensity 2 in Masbate City and Intensity 1 in Tabon, Juban and Sorsogon.
