MANILA, Philippines – A retired police officer running for office in the 2010 election was murdered by suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Camarines Sur.

Ponciano Numeron, 50, is running as a municipal councilor candidate under the Nacionalista Party in the coming polls.

He was murdered on Thursday afternoon while restoring busted lights in South Ulaniban, Barangay San Antonio in Pasacao, Camarines Sur.

Reports said Numeron refused to pay permit-to-campaign/permit-to-win (PTC/PTW) fees to rebels.

Numeron’s friends say the retired policeman from the Pasacao Municipal Police Station had been receiving grave threats. He received text messages from suspected NPA rebels, extorting money which he refused to pay.

Aside from being a candidate, Numeron was also a director of Camarines Sur Electric Cooperative 1. With Noel Alamar, radio dzMM
