MANILA (2nd UPDATE) – The convoy of Cagayan Rep. Juan Ponce ‘Jack’ Enrile was fired upon by unidentified gunmen in Mawab, Compostela Valley on Tuesday, officials of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) said.

The UNA media bureau said no one was hurt in the incident.

According to Enrile’s campaign staff John Garcia, Enrile’s 7-vehicle convoy came from Nabunturan, Compostela Valley and was headed for Tagum when gunshots were heard at around 3 p.m.

Garcia said bullets hit the last vehicle, which was about 2 vehicles away from Enrile’s van.

Police suspect that Enrile may not have been the target of the attack, as there have been several instances in the past where communist rebels had strafed police cars.

In a statement, Enrile said he will not “speculate on who fired the shots, who the intended target was, or the motive behind the incident.”

“I am just extremely grateful that none of us was hurt. But I still deplore the fact that this happened,” he said.

Enrile is running for senator under UNA's ticket and was in southern Mindanao for a sortie with other UNA candidates. -- with a report from Ron Gagalac, ABS-CBN News
