Treasure hunter killed in Isabela landslide
MANILA, Philippines – A man hunting for gold in the town of Angadanan, Isabela was killed in a landslide last Friday.
The victim was identified as farmer Zoilo Soliven.
Authorities said Soliven was digging for gold with 2 others when the landslide occurred.
“Tinatawag namin na umakyat na para mananghalian na, pagkasagot niya ng ‘Oo,’ biglang gumuho ang lupa,” said Antonio Benitez, one of Soliven’s companions.
The victim’s wife, Marites Soliven, said her husband was treasure hunting because he wanted to buy a gift for his eldest daughter who is graduating from kindergarten.
“May gusto siyang bilhin at sabi niya kaya niyang pag-ipunan ‘yun ng kahit isang linggo lang. Gusto niyang bilhan ng DVD ‘yung anak niya para sa graduation,” she said.
Meanwhile, Angadanan officials said an investigation will be launched to determine who should be liable for the incident.
“Hindi naman kami pumapayag na may mag-treasure hunting doon ng walang kaukulang permit,” said municipal administrator Rommel Alog. -- Report from Harris Julio, ABS-CBN News Cagayan Valley
