Five WWII bombs unearthed in General Santos City
Residents of a village in General Santos City have unearthed five vintage bombs Sunday afternoon, ABS-CBN Regional Network Group reported.
Jun Sapar, a barangay councilman of Purok 2 Barangay Buayan, said residents accidentally dug up the World War II bombs while they were planting bananas.
The residents carefully pulled out the vintage bombs from the ground. They then turned them over to authorities in General Santos City on Monday.
Military ordnance experts said the recovered bombs are similar to a smoke rifle grenade used to help soldiers during night operations.
They said the bombs, which odnance experts have yet to identify whether they are from the Japanese Imperial Army or US troops during the World War II, could still explode if accidentally ignited.
Residents in the area where the bombs were excavated said some Japanese soldiers camped in the area towards the end of the World War II.
Prior to the discovery of the bombs, residents claimed they also unearthed some spare parts of vintage vehicles which they sold to junk shops in the city.
Some tunnels were reportedly also discovered in the area and nearby villages in the city that were believed to have been used by Japanese soldiers in the last world war.
