Negros women hit entry of 'Playboy' mag

The Negros chapter of the women's group Gabriela on Tuesday condemned the entry of "Plaboy" men's magazine in the Philippines, saying it is another form of "high-class prostitution."
"[This] is another form of exploitation, another form of scouting for a high class prostitutes," said Nenita Cherniguin, acting chairwoman of Gabriela-Negros.
She added that because of the current economic situation, many Filipinas may be enticed to pose as models in the magazine, a publication known for showcasing nudity.
Cherniguin also said that the magazine, considered as a pornographic material, is an affront to women.
She said that the magazine would only result to the rise in crimes against women.
Cherniguin said Gabriela will launch a protest rally in time for the magazine's maiden edition.
In an ANC interview, Playboy editor-in-chief Beting Dolor said the magazine's Philippine edition will not be like its US counterpart.
"That depends what part of the world. It will not be like the US edition. There will be a lot of similarities. We will have women, of course, I think that's what people consider when they think of Playboy, you have women. It will not be as bold as the US edition but it will not be as tame as the Indonesian edition."
Dolor added that the magazine's market would be the 30 and above age bracket. "We are a daddy magazine...More mature."
The magazine editor also defended the articles that would see publication.
"It's supposed to be a good read. People say they read it for the articles. That means we should have really good articles, which means we should have the best writers. That's true for Playboy USA and I think it's true for Playboy Philippines. I was able to get the likes of Krip Yuson, Butch Dalisay and some friends like Mike Marasigan, I think, from BusinessWorld."
Playboy was founded by businessman Hugh Hefner and his associates in Chicago. Its first issue was published in December 1953 and featured Marilyn Monroe on the cover.
The magazine is published monthly and features photographs of nude women, articles on fashion, sports, consumer goods and public figures, among others.
