Duterte wants Davao City placed under Comelec control
MANILA, Philippines - Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Monday asked the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to place the city under its control to stop the rising number of election-related violence.
"I want the Comelec to take control [of Davao City]," Duterte announced, adding that placing the city under Comelec control would assure a fair and clean elections.
Duterte made the call after his political opponents accused him of involvement in the kidnapping of 2 supporters of Bantay Laya party-list Rep. Jovito Palparan last March 24 and the harassment of campaigner of House Speaker Prospero Nograles in Paquibato district last March 11.
Last March 20, Megcawayan barangay captain Glenn Escovilla claimed that 2 gunmen tried to assassinate him. He believes that the gunmen were hired by the political opponents of Duterte, whom he solidly supports.
Duterte is running for vice-mayor while Nograles is running for city mayor against Duterte's daughter, Sara. -- Report from Paul Palacio, ABS-CBN Davao
