The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced on Tuesday that the military in Basilan and Sulu will not halt its operations against lawless groups like the Abu Sayyaf, even while residents and local officials go on a restful Holy Week break.

1st Lt. Steffani Cacho, AFP Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom) spokesperson, said operations against kidnappers of Leah Patris in Sumisip town in Basilan will continue, and so will other operations in other areas under Westmincom's responsibility.

Meanwhile, Task Force Zamboanga chief Col. Santiago Baluyot said he did not allow his troops or personnel to go on leave or vacation since he wanted their strength to "remain intact during the observance of Holy Week."

Since the military deployment will concentrate on churches, seaports, airports and bus terminals. Baluyot also urged businessmen to also help authorities secure their own establishments.

Starting Wednesday security forces in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula will be placed under heightened alert status to maximize deployment of troops in key areas and to ensure the safety of all devotees.
