Party-list campaigner an NPA member?
MANILA, Philippines - Police have arrested a party-list campaign coordinator in Bacolod City on Monday due to suspicions that he is a member of the New People's Army (NPA).
Members of the Bacolod City Police Office's intelligence division arrested Akap Anak party-list campaign coordinator Romulo Bitoon after attending a press conference on Monday.
Police said Bitoon is the leader of the NPA's cultural and propaganda group in Negros Occidental province.
Police added that the suspect also has a standing warrant of arrest for his alleged involvement in the torching of a transloading station in Toboso town in 2007.
Bitoon, meanwhile, denied that he is a member of the communist movement. He said he is being harassed by the authorities for his active support for activist groups.
Rights group Karapatan and members of the Kabataan party-list, meanwhile, assailed Bitoon's arrest.
