STA. BARBARA, Iloilo--Operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Division (EOD) under the Philippine National Police detonated a ton of explosives in bomb disposal operations at Barangay Canipayan, Sta. Barbara in Iloilo on Monday morning.

Authorities detonated five 60mm mortar ammunitions, three 81mm mortar ammunitions, assorted fragmentation and rifle grenades, several tear gas canister, and a claymore mine. The Iloilo Police Provincial Officer (IPPO) also disposed of large vintage bombs during the detonations.

During the procedure, the explosives were placed inside a five-feet deep hole in order to reduce the impact of the explosion. The EOD then placed a detonating chord, blasting cap, and C-4 explosive on the pile to trigger the explosion.

The first attempt at detonation, however, failed because the detonating cord did ignite the blasting cap. The second attempt succeeded, however, and the blast was reportedly heard up to nearby Canipayan barangays which were a few kilometers away from the site.

IPPO director Senior Superintendent Ricardo de la Paz said the disposal is a part of their safety measures since the IPPO is not equipped with storage facilities for recovered bombs and ammunitions.

According to de la Paz, this is the first disposal that IPPO conducted after one of their bomb disposal experts was killed while detonating a fragmentation grenaded in Iloilo City last month.
