Nograles: I'm not bolting Lakas
MANILA, Philippines - House Speaker Prospero Nograles clarified Tuesday that he is not leaving the Lakas-Kampi-CMD.
"Hindi naman ako umalis (I did not leave). I was the Lakas President. I don't want my party to be wrecked by any wrecking crew," Nograles told reporters in Davao City.
He also denied that he is already pushing for the candidacy of Nacionalista Party standard-bearer Sen. Manuel "Manny" Villar Jr., but could not immediately affirm his support for administration presidential candidate Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoro.
"Wala naman kaming problema. Masyado na akong matanda sa politika para maging immature. (There's no problem [between me and Teodoro]). I'm too old to be immature)," Nograles told ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda, referring to Teodoro's statement that the speaker's defection from Lakas-Kampi-CMD would not affect his campaign.
He, however, said that several senior members of the ruling party have been communicating with each other and there was an informal consensus that they will remain loyal to the party, but they might support other presidential candidates.
"Kaming mga senior candidates nag-iisip na baka pagdating sa presidente maghiwa-hiwalay na lang kami pero hindi kami bubukod ng party (We, the senior candidates are thinking that we might support other presidential candidates, but we will not leave the party)," Nograles said.
Nograles clarified that he and other senior party members were just complaining of being left out. He said the party leadership has been making decisions without consulting their senior members, including him.
"Even as a senior officer of the party, I hardly know what's happening because they make decisions without the courtesy of even briefing us," Nograles said.
He said it might be too late to keep the party united, referring to the defections of several members.
He said all "displaced" senior congressmen and provincial party officers are all busy campaigning and it may be impossible to gather them all in a general assembly.
New Lakas-Kampi-CMD chair Amelita Villarosa explained that all decisions and appointments in the party were implemented through the executive meeting.
Villarosa said Nograles was absent when she and other new party officers were appointed because he was busy with his campaign in Davao City.
Nograles is running for city mayor against the daughter of incumbent Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Gibo expecting Nograles defection
Administration presidential candidate Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro has been quoted as saying that he was expecting Nograles's defection.
"Alam nyo, di naman tayo pinanganak kahapon (I'm not born yesterday). Well, I expected that because I've been hearing reports since long ago. Kung talagang confirmed yun, matagal ng may mga rumors (If that is really confirmed, I have heard rumors about it)," he said.
He added that Nograles's defection will not affect his campaign since he has his own volunteers in Davao.
"Di makakaapekto yun. Di naman sya masigasig na tumutulong sa kin nun (It will not affect my campaign. He is not helping me there anyway)," he said.
Teodoro's campaign manager, lawyer Mike Toledo, said that more than 40 provincial governors have already signified their support for the administration candidate.
"It is indeed sad. We all know that politics is addition but then again, we know he has been with the party for such a long period of time, definitely a party stalwart, a well-respected legislator and very good lawyer at that," Toledo told ANC on Monday. – with reports from ANC and Brix Pansacala, ABS-CBN Davao

THE resignation of House Speaker Prospero Nograles from the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD party on Monday is not a surprise to some who have been expecting it since last month.
Some councilors from the City of Mati have already been asking for confirmation regarding Nograles' resignation from the administration party and his eventual transfer to Nacionalista Party (NP) of Senator Manny Villar.
The Speaker's camp, however, kept mum on the matter until Monday. It said among the reasons Nograles resigned from Lakas was the alleged "snub" of presidential bet Gilberro Teodoro when the latter appointed presidential executive assistant Madeline "Bebot" Dizon Marfori as head of his campaign team in Davao City.
Marfori has been known to be the projects coordinator of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and a very close associate of the Chief Executive.
She is also rumored as a supporter of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, arch-rival of the Speaker.
However, Marfori said in an interview Monday that she is not supporting any local politician.
She said she is only for Teodoro and no one else, adding that she is not a Lakas member thus she should not be blamed for Nograles' resignation.
"It's his choice, bahala siya diyan. I am not a Lakas member. I am only for Gibo, wala akong sinusuportahan sa local politics," Marfori said.
Marfori's cousin-in-law, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. President Simeon Marfori, declared his support to the presidential bid of Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III last week.
Marfori's brother-in-law and University of Mindanao owner Guillermo P. Torres is also a supporter of the Dutertes after having a run-in with Nograles.
"Who are they trying to fool? It is an open secret in Davao City that the Marforis are for the Dutertes and for Noynoy and yet the party appoints a Marfori as their pointman? I can only sympathize for Gibo because in the final analysis, he is counting on people with other interests other than to make him win his fight," Nograles said in a released statement Monday.
In the same released statement, Speaker Nograles confirmed that he is "seriously considering bolting from Lakas-Kampi-CMD because the party is being run without proper consultations even to him as the party's Vice Chairman and senior member of the National Advisory Board."
"Hilong-hilo na kami sa nangyayari sa partido. Even as a senior officer of the party, I hardly know what's happening because they make decisions without the courtesy of even briefing us. Kahit man lang tawag sana para hindi naman kami nagugulat sa mga lalabas na balita kinabukasan. Now what's the use of being with the administration party? I don't even get any text saying hi or hello from our party standard bearer?" Nograles said.
"The administration party is out of control. It is in total disarray contrary to what is being bandied about in the media," Nograles added.
Nograles, however, refused to confirm or deny reports that he is jumping to Villar's camp although some members of the Team Nograles in Davao City are already supporting NP Vice-Presidential bet Loren Legarda.
"I might and I might not," he said.
"I'm getting adequate support from my supporters here in Davao, including many businessmen who are already complaining because of the exorbitant taxes and plunderous corruption of the Duterte administration. We can run the campaign of the Team Nograles without any help from any party," he said.
In one instance, Nograles said the group of Teodoro even went to Davao without the courtesy of informing them about their presence and only decided to inform him when they needed people to mobilize for their activities.
He added that when the party decided to re-organize with the sudden resignation of Teodoro as chairman and Governor Miguel Dominguez as president, he was not even extended the courtesy of any invitation to join the party's executive meeting held at Linden Suites a few weeks ago.
"I'm a senior party member and they only want to use me for their convenience? I think that is foul. I have been a good soldier but I also deserve some respect," Nograles said.
If Nograles' resignation is expected to trigger a chain reaction of resignations by his close allies in the party, his move to the NP, however, is not affecting the massive support the Liberal Party is getting from Davao City.
The city has been declared by LP and local political party of Duterte, Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, as a "yellow country" due to the massive support of the Dabawenyos during the team's visit last Friday.
