ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - After undergoing a week of medication at the Camp Navarro General Hospital in Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom), one of the 2 wounded alleged members of the Abu Sayyaf died Tuesday evening.

WesMinCom chief Lt Gen Ben Dolorfino said that based on the doctor’s medical records, alias “Umbak” died of cardio-respiratory arrest secondary to sepsis and wound infection.

Dolorfino said “Umbak” sustained fatal gun shot and shrapnel wounds on his head, face and different parts of his body.

He said military doctors did everything for “Umbak." WesMinCom even spent around P100,000 for the medication and other needs of the bandit.

Umbak and his companion Ajib Jainal sustained wounds during an encounter at the Isabela City grandstand last April 13, where a Starex van carrying an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded as Marine troops engaged the armed men on board the vehicle.

'Decent burial' for Umbak

The cadaver of Umbak was brought to the WesMinCom mosque where a noon prayer was held and the alleged bandit was buried in a Muslim cemetery following the tradition of Islam.

WesMinCom Imam Lt. Col. Sanuan Akkuh said Umbak is also a human being, and if even he is considered a bandit, he also has a right to be given a decent burial.

Umbak's companion, Ajib Jainal, who was also wounded during the encounter in Isabela City Grandstand, will be discharged from the hospital any time within the week.

General Dolorfino said Jainal has already recuperated from his wounds and received ample medication. He can now be turned over to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Authorities are confident Jainal’s testimony will help the PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines determine the mastermind of the April 13 Isabela City blasts.

They said the death of his companion Umbak will not affect their investigation to determine the real culprit of the attack.
