Population in Maguindanao drops: census
COTABATO CITY, Philippines – Based on 2010 census data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) in Maguindanao, the province's population had dropped to 944,718 from 2007's 1,273,715.
Maguindanao provincial statistics officer Razulden Mangelen said the study was conducted from May 17 until June 2010.
Authorities said NSO took 2 years to release the result due to a series of validations to ensure the accuracy of the data.
The 2010 census result showed that Sultan Kudarat’s population declined to 82,758 from 121,324 in 2007.
Population in the municipality of Shariff Aguak, which had a total population of 70,340 in 2007 dropped to 35,964 in the 2010 census result.
Population in Parang, Maguindanao, meanwhile, dropped to 73,247 from 102,247 in 2007.
NSO admitted that some chief executives will not be happy with the result since it will affect their internal revenue allotment.
NSO said it will conduct a consultative meeting next month with all local government units to further explain the result of the census.
From the 36 municipalities of Maguindanao, only 4 towns—Buluan, South Upi, North Upi and Pagalungan—have recorded an increase.
