MANILA – The commander of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, Maj. Gen. Nestor Añonuevo, has been relieved of his post, army officials said Friday.

Añonuevo will be replaced by Brigadier General Ricardo Visaya as officer-in-charge.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang said Añonuevo’s relief was ordered by the general headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Army leadership just implemented it.

"The AFP is trying to firm up the leadership of units, especially in the 4th ID," said Cabangbang.

The 4th Infantry Division is based in Cagayan de Oro City and covers 8 Mindanao provinces, including Misamis Oriental.

But Cabangbang neither confirmed nor denied if the recent ambush of Gingoog City Mayor Ruth Guingona influenced the change in Army leadership.

"Our general statement is we are trying to firm up our leadership,” he said.

Saturday’s attack by New People's Army rebels left Guingona wounded and 2 of her bodyguards dead. -- With a report from Edwin Sevidal, dzMM
