MANILA -- Laguna Police Provincial Office is implementing a total gun ban in the province in preparation for the annual multi-sport competition, Palarong Pambansa, which will start on May 4.

The office released a memorandum that temporarily suspends all permits to carry firearms outside the residence.

Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Romulo Sapitula also ordered all police chiefs in the province to implement the gun ban for 19 days.

The gun ban, which was implemented on Monday (April 28), will last until May 16.

Sapitula said that under the gun ban, only uniformed members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and other law enforcement agencies who are on duty will be allowed to carry firearms.

The total gun ban policy is part of the security preparations for the Palarong Pambansa.

It was implemented to ensure that there will be no firearm-related incidents, as well as to ensure the security and safety of all tourists and delegates who will attend the event.

The annual multi-sport competition for Filipino student-athletes will be held until May 10. -- report from Ronilo Dagos, DZMM
