Zamboanga City on heightened alert
ZAMBOANGA, Philippines – Security in Zamboanga City was raised to heightened alert status in anticipation of possible retaliatory attacks in the wake of the death of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
Several members of Abu Sayyaf, a militant group which has links to al Qaeda, have been known to hide out in Zamboanga.
Supt. Edwin de Ocampo, acting City Police Director of Zamboanga City Police Office, said a 24-hour police visibility will be implemented throughout the city, including bus terminals.
The ABS-CBN News team in Zamboanga, however, reportedly did not encounter police forces in a Zamboanga bus terminal at around 10 p.m. on Monday night.
De Ocampo said the officers may have been on break.
Reports said baggage inspection of passengers in the terminal is noticeably inconsistent, as well.
Rural Transit Bus Lines, meanwhile, said bus marshals are not available at all hours of the day. -- Report from RJ Rosalado, ABS-CBN Zamboanga
