Food poisoning downs 50 people in Batangas
BATANGAS - More than 50 barangay treasurers attending a seminar in a hotel here were hospitalized after consuming spoiled food.
Tanauan City Administrator Herminilando Trinidad said the victims were among over 1,000 participants in the 3-day Batangas Barangay Treasurer seminar held in Lima Hotel in Malvar, Batangas.
Trinidad said the seminar started on May 5, Monday, and ended yesterday to discuss the new guidelines in the accounting system of barangay funds.
Reports reached the Tanauan City Hall that 30 participants were rushed to Mary Mediatrix Hospital in Lipa City, 10 in CP Reyes Hospital and 13 in Mercado Hospital, both in Tanauan City.
Eva Oida, barangay treasurer of Barangay Ulango in Tanauan City, said the victims started to feel dizziness, stomach pain and vomiting after consuming ube cake and fruit juice for their morning merienda. They also ate fish fillet, chicken and ensaladang talong for their lunch.
"Actually hindi pa namin malaman kung ano talaga ang nakaapekto sa amin, kasi yung iba hindi naman nakakain ng lunch pero nagkasakit din," Oida said.
Virginia Lopez, city treasurer of Tanauan, said: "Yung ibang delegates naamoy na medyo masama na ang ensaladang talong kaya malaki ang hinala nila na yon ang nakasira ng mga tiyan nila."
Lopez said she was able to talk to one of the receptionists in Lima Hotel who requested anonymity and assured all the victims that they will be well taken cared of, including all hospital bills.
Health officials of the province have yet to conduct an investigation to determine the origin of the food poisoning.
