(UPDATE2) 'Emong' kills three in Central Luzon
Three people have died and hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes during the onslaught of Typhoon "Emong"(international codename Chan-hom), a National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) official said Friday.
Undersecretary Anthony Golez, deputy NDCC administrator, said that based on a partial report from their regional office in Central Luzon, two died in a landslide in Ifugao province while one died in Zambales during the typhoon's onslaught on Thursday night.
An ABS-CBN News report identified the two fatalities from Ifugao as Aira Grace Daang and Marife Daang. Their relatives identified as Samuel Daang and Venci Mae Daang were still missing.
Three more members of their family identified as VAlen, Daisy and Che-che have been rescued.
The initial death count for "Emong" brought the total of people killed in the last three storms that have passed the Philippines to 30. Twenty-seven people died when Typhoon Dante recently ravaged Bicol province.
Meanwhile, Golez said 208 families or 808 persons were evacuated from Pampanga, Zambales and Olongapo City. ABS-CBN News also reported that 100 families from the coastal villages in Pangasinan were evacuated ahead of the typhoon's onslaught in the province.
The typhoon made landfall in nothern Pangasinan around 10 p.m. Thursday. It started to weaken while crossing the Cordillera mountains.
Weather bureau PAGASA has lifted all weather alerts in Luzon as the typhoon continued to weaken as it moved away from the country.
As of 10:30 a.m., the typhoon has weakened into a tropical storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 80 kph. It was moving east northeast at 15 kph.
"Emong" was 200 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City or 220 kilometers southeast of Aparri, Cagayan. It was expected to move further from Cagayan by Saturday morning.
