5.7 quake jolts Davao Occidental
MANILA – A magnitude 5.7 quake struck off Davao Occidental on Friday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said the epicenter of the quake was located 31 kilometers southeast of Sarangani town at 1:44 p.m.
The following intensities were felt:
- Intensity IV - Davao City; Mati City, Davao Oriental
- Intensity III - Bislig, Surigao del Sur; Tagum City
- Intensity I - Gingoog, Misamis Oriental
Phivolcs said Intensity IV, so far the strongest reported in this quake, is "felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck. Hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle."
''Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Water in containers oscillate strongly. Rumbling sound may sometimes be heard."
The quake, which was tectonic in origin, struck at a depth of 113 kilometers.
Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected from the quake but damage is unlikely.
