MANILA, Philippines – Hundreds of small-scale miners blocked the road going to Pantukan, Compostela Valley on Thursday to protest the entry of large-scale mining companies in the gold mine area.

The group set up a human barricade along the Kingking Bridge, which caused hundreds of passengers to be stranded since 9 a.m.

Only ambulances were allowed to pass through by the protesters.

The protesters said they will not leave the area until a dialogue is held between them and Pantukan Mayor Tok Sarenas.

The local government of Pantukan has already convened the town’s crisis management committee to discuss measures to convince the small-scale miners to end their demonstration.

Sarenas has also requested a private banana firm to allow light vehicles to pass through their property as an alternate route while negotiations with the protesters are still on going. -- Report from Joel Ramirez, ABS-CBN News Davao
