MANILA, Philippines – Around 500 houses were razed by fire in Barangay 60-A and Barangay 59 in Old Road Sagkahan, Tacloban City on Sunday.
The fire, which reached general alarm, quickly spread because the houses were made of light materials.
Some fire victims were blaming the firefighters because they were allegedly slow in responding to the situation.
“Hindi pa noon ganun kalaki ang apoy, pero ang tagal kasi ng bumbero,” said resident Lea Cabugayan.
Fire Chief Inspector Adel de Paz Bautista, on the other hand, said the fire trucks encountered some problems which slightly delayed their response.
“Yung fire trucks natin medyo nagkaroon ng problema kaunti, pero saglit lang naman,” he said,
Authorities are currently conducting a probe for fear that someone might have died during the accident.
Meanwhile, the local government of Tacloban City was quick in giving relief goods and temporary evacuation to the fire victims.
“Depending on what there needs are eh. Some who have to be relocated, then we will look for a relocation site for them,” said Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez. – from a report by Jenette Fariola-Ruedas, ABS-CBN News Tacloban
