MANILA, Philippines - A strong quake was felt in a wide area in Mindanao early Monday evening, but Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it had yet to receive reports of damages caused by the tremor.

Phivolcs said the quake was measured at Magnitude 5.8 and occurred at 6:16 p.m..

Using the 10-point Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale, the quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Pagadian City, Cotabato City, Isulan in Sultan Kudarat, Matutum in South Cotabato and Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat. Intensity 4 is described in the Phivolcs' PEIS as moderately strong.

It was felt at Intensity 3 in Zamboanga City, Cagayan De Oro City, General Santos City and Matalam in North Cotabato, while Intensity 2 was felt at Kidapawan City, Makilala in North Cotabato, Dipolog City, Davao City and Iligan City.

Phivolcs said no one was reported hurt, and the quake did not cause any damage to property.

"It's quite strong that normally can cause some damage to old structures, but it was so deep that we don't expect it to cause any damage," said Henry Penarubias, a Phivolcs seismologist in a report by Reuters. "We don't expect it to generate any tsunami."

US Geological Survey (USGS), meanwhile, gave a different measurement saying the quake had a magnitude of 6.0 and happened at a depth of 33 kilometers. Phivolcs said it happened at a depth of 66 km.

USGS also reported that the tremor occurred 45 km southwest of Cotabato and 115 km south-southeast of Pagadian City. With reports from ABS-CBN Regional Network Group and Reuters
