COMPOSTELA VALLEY -- The New People's Army (NPA) admitted abducting six forest workers from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Barangay New Leyte, in Maco, Compostela Valley, a military official said Monday.

According to Captain Alberto Cabrera, spokesperson of the Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), a certain Daniel Ibarra, who introduced himself as the spokesperson of the NPA in the province, admitted that they kidnapped the forest workers.

Cabrera said the NPA leader did not mention any demands in exchange for the freedom of the abducted workers.

He said that the rebels may have thought the six workers were members of the AFP or the Philippine National Police (PNP) after they recovered a drone from the group, which they will use in inspecting the government's National Greening Program in the area.

Cabrera also denied reports that three of the six abducted workers have been released. -- report from Edwin Sevidal, DZMM
