Laguna exec slay suspects face raps
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has filed murder cases against three suspects in the assassination of Laguna 3rd district board member and his driver Wednesday evening, officials said.
Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz of the Laguna Police said they already filed charges against Eugene Bacoto, 25; Ricky Valdez alias “Avatar”; and a certain “Boknoy,” all residents of Dasmariñas, Cavite.
The three suspects were implicated in the murder of board member Reynaldo Paras and his driver Giovanni Dumaraos.
“We filed the case yesterday before the San Pablo City Regional Trial Court and we consider this case ‘solved’ less than 48 after it happened,” Cruz said.
Last Wednesday, the 55-year-old Paras and Dumaraos were about to board their vehicle parked along Bonifacio St. in Barangay 7-C, San Pablo City when the suspects ambushed them around 8 p.m.
In the first burst of gunfire, Dumaraos immediately fell down and never managed to fire his magnum .357 service firearm.
On the other hand, Paras managed to draw his .44 caliber pistol and fire at the suspects, hitting both of them, including Bacoto.
Paras succumbed from multiple gunshot wounds on Thursday afternoon at the San Pablo City Medical Center. Bacoto died a few hours after the shooting incident while undergoing treatment at Panlalawigan Pagamutan ng Laguna.
The other suspect managed to escape but believed to be also wounded. His motorcycle was recovered several kilometers away from the crime scene with traces of bloodstains.
In a phone interview with San Pablo chief of police Superintendent Ferdinand de Castro, they are now gathering more evidence against the brother of a politician believed to be behind the attack.
Cruz likewise said that several hours before the victims were ambushed, Paras visited him at the provincial police headquarters to report that he has reliable information on a gun-for-hire group from Cavite that was sent to assassinate him.
