Ex-mayor gunned down in Batangas
BATANGAS -- A 57-year old former mayor of Mataas Na Kahoy was gunned down by still unidentified suspect in his town before noon Sunday, police said
Mataas Na Kahoy police chief Senior Inspector Alfredo Lorin Jr. identified the victim as Arnulfo Rivera, a resident of Barangay Calingatan and a former mayor of Mataas na Kahoy town from 1998 to 2001.
According to the report, Rivera had just attended Sunday mass at their chapel in Barangay Calingatan and was walking home when the gunman followed and shot him twice in the head at around 10 a.m.
Witnesses said the gunman escaped onboard a waiting motorcycle and fled towards unknown direction.
Rivera was rushed to Mary Mediatrix Hospital in Lipa City for treatment but eventually died at around 12:15 p.m.
Scene of the crime operatives recovered two spent shells of caliber .45 pistol from the crime scene.
Probers have yet to determine the motive and the identities of the gunman.
The Batangas police have launched a manhunt operation against the suspect.
