Rebels bomb sugar company in NegOcc

ESCALANTE CITY, Negros Occidental - Around 15 armed men in military uniform and armed with AK-47 rifles entered the transloading station of Lopez Sugar Corporation in Escalante City around 9 p.m. Sunday.

The armed men introduced themselves as members of the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People's Army (CPP-NPA).

According to Negros Occidental Police Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Milko Lirzazan, witnesses told them that they later saw some of the armed men carrying improvised explosive devices (IED).

The IEDs were placed in the core laboratory, under the weighing scale, and at the crane.

The rebels took the shotgun and handheld radios of the workers and asked them to leave the area.

At around 10:00, the witnesses heard explosions coming from the building.

The rebels then fired several shots at the hauler inside the compound, before leaving the scene.

No one was hurt during the incident but police say the damage may have reached P9 million.

Authorities are still waiting for the final report from the company.

Investigation also revealed that the NPA has been asking for revolutionary taxes from the company, but the management refused to give in.

The Philippine Army have launched a pursuit operation to apprehend the perpetrators.
