Fire hits cargo vessel in Cebu
CONSOLACION, Cebu - Fire hit a cargo vessel in Nagasaka Shipyard while it was docking on Monday evening.
The Consolacion fire department said the vessel caught fire at around 9:20 p.m.
Firemen from Consolacion, Mandaue City, and Lilo-an responded to the incident.
According to some Nagasaka Shipyard employees, the fire started at the upper deck of the vessel. They suspect that an unattended lit candle caused the fire.
Fire Officer 1 Crescencio Quijano Jr. said investigations are still ongoing to determine what caused the blaze.
Quijano said he and fellow firefighters encountered difficulty in putting out the fire because the vessel was still in the water.
He added that they had to connect six to eight hoses just to reach the burning vessel.
Firefighters prioritized the vessel's engine room, which contained bunker fuel, to prevent the fire from spreading to other vessels in the area.
The fire was placed under control at around 10 p.m.
No casualty was reported. The cost of damage from the fire is not yet available.
