CEBU CITY - The Task Force Against Illegal Fishing confiscated 467 kilos of thresher shark meat already packed in plastic bags and 1557 kilos of barla fish bound for Basak, Lapu-Lapu City.

The shipment was found in an Elf truck from Dumaguete City.

Loy Madrigal, the leader of the task force, said they were able to hold the truck in Naga City Wednesday night

Driver Allan Empinado and two other companions, Jerry Atillo and Arnel Amistoso, were arrested.

The task force said the meat was supposed to be processed into fishballs and tempura.

Empinado said he had a transport permit from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), but they only declared the barla fish in their permit.

The driver and his two companions will be charged with violation of Republic Act 8550 of the Fisheries Code of the Philippines and violation of the Wildlife Act.

Thresher sharks are usually found in Malapascua Island, a world-famous scuba diving site. Capturing these thresher sharks, killing, and selling them is prohibited.

The suspects are detained at Naga Police Station.
