Teenager dies as jeep overturns
MANILA, Philippines – A teenage boy died after a jeepney overturned in Negros Occidental, police said Thursday.
SPO1 Noven Martin said 15-year-old Jeffrey Paz was thrown away from the jeepney after it overturned along a road in Barangay Bagonbon, San Carlos City.
Jeepney driver Michael Baraquia said he lost control of his vehicle after its brakes failed.
He said he decided to continue driving the jeepney along the road until it overturned to prevent the vehicle from plunging into a ravine.
Paz and 25 students and teachers, some of whom were injured, were reportedly on their way to Bagonbon High School when the accident occurred.
Among the injured passengers were Bagonbon High School principal Jocelyn Sumilhig and teachers Eva Benlot, Jerlinda de Ocampo, and Josephine Sandag.
Another injured passenger, identified as Betchy Ardiente, was pinned under the jeepney. She is now recovering at the hospital.
Baraquia, meanwhile, is now under police custody and is facing reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple serious physical injuries. – report from Yasmin Pascual-Dormido, dzMM
