MANILA - Four new cases of influenza A (H1N1) have been confirmed in the Visayas on Tuesday.

In Eastern Visayas, the regional director of the Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed two cases of A (H1N1) in the region.

Dr. Edgardo Gonzaga, DOH Region VIII director, said that laboratory test results from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa City was the basis of the confirmation.

"We received results from RITM that we have two cases [which have beeen] under observation whom they tested to be positive, so dalawa na ang kaso natin dito sa Region VIII," Gonzaga said.

Doctors are constantly monitoring the two patients and families of the first case in the region.

The first case was a seaman from Catbalogan, Samar and who is now confined at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center. The second case is of a student from the Philippine Science High School Eastern Visayas Campus (PSHS-EVC) in Palo, Leyte.

Three in Bacolod

The DOH regional office in Western Visayas has also confirmed that two pupils in Bacolod City tested positive for the virus.

DOH Region VI epidemiology head Dr. Glen Alonsabe said the two patients are below ten years old and have a history of travel to the United States.

The patients arrived in Bacolod City last week to study, Alonsabe said.

Family and those who came in close contact with the patients are now under self-quarantine in their residences.

The mother of one the patients is also being observed for flu symptoms.

Meanwhile, the regional office is also waiting for confirmation of test results for two American missionaries who earlier exhibited flu symptoms but have been discharged from the hospital already.

The update brings the total number of cases in Bacolod City to three. The first case was a student from De La Salle University-Manila who came home last week after classes were suspended in the university due to confirmed cases of A (H1N1).
