(UPDATE) Camarines Sur mayor dies after road accident
The mayor of Pili town in Camarines Sur province has died Thursday early evening after he figured in a road accident in Gumaca town in Quezon province Wednesday afternoon.
Pili Mayor Alexis San Luis died in a hospital where he was taken after the incident. An earlier report mistakenly said that he only suffered slight injuries. The mayor’s death was confirmed by his son, Noy.
San Luis was onboard a Ford Everest sports utility vehicle travelling towards Bicol region, when an oncoming bus hit his SUV. The bus driver purportedly lost control of the bus.
Gumaca police said initial investigation showed that the Cagsawa Travel and Tours bus which was driven Jesus Escoto, tried to overtake while along a road curve. The driver purportedly lost control along a portion of the curve and which reportedly was slippery due to rain and slammed into San Luis’s vehicle. The front part of the Pili mayor’s vehicle was reportedly almost totally destroyed.
A parked tricycle and jeep were also hit by the bus.
Leda, San Luis’s wife meanwhile was reported to still be in the hospital’s intensive care unit. Four other companions onboard the vehicle reportedly also suffered injuries and were also immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.
Escoto meanwhile was detained by Gumaca police and may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting to damage to property and multiple physical injuries. With a report from Faye Enciso, ABS-CBN Bicol
