TACLOBAN CITY - Due to recurring security problems in Catarman Airport, officials of Northern Samar province are contemplating the transfer of the airport to Pambujan town.

The runway of the airport is used by the people as a road or plaza. The practice was reported to pose danger to aircraft operations which was the reason why a certain airline company suspended its operations in the airport two months ago.

Last June the airline’s operations resumed after the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) office in the region came up with a schedule for people to use the runway only before and after aircraft operations.

Local government officials however said they want to come up with a permanent solution to the problem.

“The governor and congressman of the province have opened it up with President Arroyo when she visited there last month that they are planning to transfer the airport to Pambujan,” said Presidential Assistant for Eastern Visayas Cynthia NIerras.

The officials, Nierras said, disclosed that they already have a new site seen in Pambujan town. The President however reportedly ordered that the officials first make a thorough study of the proposal.

Catarman Airport

I've been hearing about the transfer for almost ten years now but i guess lack of budget and too much politicking in the province is hindering it???

catarman airport security

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just build a chain link fence around the airport like they do here in the USA?
