MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang on Friday welcomed the Bangsamoro Leaders' Assembly being led by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) as another step towards peace in Mindanao.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, in a press briefing, said the gathering will allow the MILF to gather support for peace negotiations with the government.

"We view this as a positive development for the MILF to consolidate its support for the peace agreement. And so it's something that we welcome," he said.

Lacierda said Secretary Ging Deles, head of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, as well as members of the government negotiating panel, are attending the gathering in Daparanan.

On whether this would fast-track the signing a peace agreement with the MILF, Lacierda said: "We certainly would hope so and as we have always stated, we are cautiously optimistic that a peace agreement will be signed within this administration." - with a report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
