ILOILO, Philippines – A failed robbery attempt in Iloilo City Saturday left one Korean severely injured.

The victim was identified as Joung Moon Seok, 23, from Daegu City, South Korea. Seok is in the Philippines to learn English.

Authorities said the victim was stabbed by 2 suspects in a robbery attempt on Luna Street, Lapaz around 1 a.m.

The suspects, identified as Dan Paul Patingan, 21, and Jade Gulmatico, 20, were arrested by police. Both are residents of Iloilo.

The 2 suspects denied the allegations despite being positively identified by the victim.

“May dumakip po sa akin. Sabi ko sa kanya hindi ako tatakbo, kasi lasing naman po ako,” said Patingan.

Authorities said the suspects intentionally wanted to hurt the victim before robbing him.

“’Yong bagong style ng panghohold-up nila, sinasaktan muna nila ang kanilang bibiktimahin. Tapos ‘yong isa nilang kasamahan ang kukuha sa mga gamit. Kanina kasi nanlaban at tumakbo ang biktima. Siguro balak nilang tuluyan,” said PO3 Rene Aguinaga.

Aguinaga noted that the suspects may have been inexperienced.

Authorities are investigating if the suspects are working with a larger network of robbers.

The suspects may face charges of frustrated homicide or slight physical injuries, depending on the results of the victim’s medical examination.-- Report from John Fernandez, ABS-CBN Iloilo
