Grenade attacks hit Zamboanga town
ZAMBOANGA, Philippines – A grenade explosion hit a residential area in Barangay Talon-Talon in Zamboanga City at noon on Saturday.
The explosion took place in front of the house of Rachelle Libutan.
Libutan, who suffered a small shrapnel wound in her arm, said a loud blast hit their house at around 12:30 p.m.
She claimed seeing 2 men, only identified as Omar and Banny, speeding away on a motorcycle shortly after the explosion.
Police Superintendent Albert Larubis, chief of Zamboanga Police Station 6, said the grenade attack could be connected to the shooting incident last May 25 that killed Libutan’s nephew.
Minutes after the explosion on Saturday, another grenade was hurled at the house of village councilor Delfin Pioquinto in Barangay Mampang.
Fortunately, the grenade did not explode.
According to the Zamboanga bomb squad, the explosives used in both incidents were M26 fragmentation grenades.
Investigators believe the attacks were launched by a single group. – With a report from RJ Rosalado, ABS-CBN Zamboanga
