Signal no. 2 still up in Batanes due to 'Huaning'
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Storm signal number 2 remains hoisted over the Batanes group of islands as typhoon "Huaning" moved closer to the Taiwan-Batanes area.
Signal number 1, meanwhile, is raised over the Calayan and Babuyan group of islands.
In its 5 p.m. bulletin, weather bureau PAGASA said the typhoon was last spotted 370 kilometers north northeast of Itbayat, Batanes with maximum winds of 165 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of 200 kph.
This disturbance continues to move at 20 kph on a west-northwest track.
It is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday morning.
In Taiwan, hundreds of villagers were evacuated and schools and businesses shut down as it prepared for the arrival of Huaning (international name: Soulik).
The typhoon is expected to pound the island with powerful winds and heavy rain over the weekend. -- With reports from ANC and AFP
