GENERAL SANTOS CITY-- The 7th National Vegetable Congress which aims to boost the country’s agricultural industry has opened in Sarangani province with Manny Pacquiao as its host.

The event, which is being held in Pacquiao’s farm in Malungon town, aims to spread new and useful information to local farmers about the latest in modern agriculture.

The congress was attended by Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap and various farm leaders from different regions of the country.

“This Congress is a partnership between government and private sector. This vegetable industry, kapag tinulungan ng gobyerno, kaya nang lumaban sa merkado,” said Yap.

The agriculture secretary said farmers will get a boost in their livelihood once they are given the direction to the right market.

Yap added that most of the vegetables being sold by local farmers are safe for consumption because his department strictly monitors the use of pesticides.

“So far sa ilang taon wala pa naman tayong naiulat na nagkasakit dahil sa pagkain ng gulay,” he said.

For his part, Pacquiao said that the public should be aware of the benefits of eating “the greens”.

The pound-for-pound boxing champion said he is happy that the Department of Agriculture has chosen his farm to be the site of this year’s vegetable congress.

“Masaya ako at ito ang napili ng Department of Agriculture at handa tayong sumuporta para sa ating mga kababayan at dapat ding kumain tayong lahat ng gulay,” he said. With a report from Jay Dayupay, ABS-CBN News SOKSARGEN.
