MANILA, Philippines - The local government of General Trias in Cavite province announced that classes in public elementary and high schools in the town will remain suspended on Thursday.

General Trias Mayor Luis "Jonjon" Ferrer IV said classes will remain suspended because of their problem with water and power supply.

Ferrer, meanwhile, said that the local government is leaving it to the management of private elementary and high schools the decision to suspend their classes.

The Department of Education on Wednesday afternoon announced that classes in the elementary and high school levels in Metro Manila and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) would resume on Thursday.

Classes were suspended Wednesday due to the impact of tropical storm “Basyang” (international name Conson).

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines confirmed a Luzon-wide blackout after its major transmission lines tripped at the height of the storm.

Cavite province is one of the hardest hit areas by Tropical Storm Basyang.

More than 100 families were directly affected by the storm in the province.
