2 die, 7 hurt in Laguna construction mishap

LAGUNA, Philippines – Two construction workers died and 7 seven others were injured when a metal scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in San Pablo City, Laguna on Friday morning.

Superintendent Ferdinand de Castro, city police chief, identified the fatalities as Benny Navarrete and Edgar Vasquez, workers of SLT Construction Company.

Those injured were Alvin Donor, Christian Ecleo, Alvin Anescal, Arnold Obsanga, Richard Vasquez, Salvador Mediado and Jerson Vidal. They were rushed to Pagamutang PangMasa ng Laguna in San Pablo City.

De Castro said the victims were sleeping under the metal scaffolding erected at the side of a mall under construction, when it collapsed.

The incident took place around 3 a.m..

"Mukhang sumobra ang bigat ang nakapatong sa scaffoldings kaya ito bumigay," De Castro said in a phone interview.
