ZAMBOANGA CITY - At least four houses were destroyed while over 100 families were evacuated after a flash flood hit Barangay Sangali in Zamboanga City on Thursday afternoon.

Residents said the flash flood came after heavy rains battered the village and the nearby mountain.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council immediately ordered preemptive evacuation while the Philippine Coast Guard sent rubber boats to rescue stranded residents.

The men, however, preferred to stay in their flooded homes to watch over their properties, said operation team leader Roland Tolentino.

The rescued residents were brought to the barangay hall.

CDRRMC officer in charge Elmeir Apolinario said about 134 families or 1,000 individuals were evacuated and given relief packs.

Analyn Dudio, a mother carrying her baby in her arms, said they were surprised as to how quick the water level rose up to their heads.

Zamboanga City has been experiencing scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the enhanced southwest monsoon or habagat caused by typhoon "Glenda."

Residents living in nearby rivers were advised to remain alert. Police and other law enforcement units were advised to remain on standby in Sangali.
