Blackout hits Albay province

MANILA, Philippines –The entire province of Albay was blanketed in darkness Tuesday night, due to a power outage caused by tropical storm “Juaning”.

Some 10 houses in Barangay Bongalon in Daraga, Albay were destroyed by the raging floods, forcing residents to evacuate.

“Wala kaming bahay, wala kaming damit, lahat inanod na eh,” said Salvador Lustado.

The residents have fled their homes and are temporarily camped in evacuation centers in Legazpi City.

Relief goods for evacuees will be delivered Wednesday morning.

A river in Barangay Cullat, also in Daraga, overflowed, causing massive floods, which made roads impassable.

Lahar from Mayon Volcano flowed down the streets of Padang area, making it impossible for rescuers to reach the first district of Albay.

Seven people from the province have been confirmed dead.

The fatalities include 3 residents of Barangay Gabon, Polangui town. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council said the 3 victims were minors.

In Barangay Basicao, meanwhile, 2 died after a coconut tree fell on their house due to the strong wind brought by the storm.

Authorities said one person died of electrocution, while another died after being swept away by flood waters.

Four individuals from Rapu-Rapu are still missing.

According to Albay Governor Joey Salceda, around 107, 000 residents of the province were affected by the storm. -- Report from Thea Omelan, ABS-CBN Bicol
