MANILA – A suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebel was killed in an encounter with the military in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental on Monday.

First Lieutenant Rey Cañete, commanding officer of the Charlie Company of the 11th Infantry Battalion, said the troops were conducting clearing operations in two separate sitios in Barangay Santol when some 30 alleged NPA rebels emerged and fired shots at them.

An alleged NPA rebel, 29-year-old Barangay Bi-ao resident Jerry Dorillo, died in the gun battle.

Seven other suspected rebels, including a minor, were wounded and arrested by the Army. They denied any links to the slain communist rebel, claiming they were not part of the group that launched the attack.

Government troops also recovered one improvised M14 rifle, three 12-gauge shotgun, two .357-caliber revolver, one homemade shotgun, and several ammunition from the site of the clash.

An operation has been launched to capture the rebels who managed to flee after the gunfight.
