MANILA, Philippines – The coastal town of Obando in Bulacan was placed under a state of calamity as residents still suffer from neck-deep floods.

Obando Mayor Orencio Gabriel said the town’s 7.5-kilometer dike was damaged anew due to strong storm surge from Manila Bay on Wednesday.

He said the entire town remains submerged in flood waters, with Barangays Tawiran and Hulo suffering from neck-deep floods.

The town’s hall was also flooded, Orencio said.

A resident identified as Efren Salvacion, 41, also drowned.

Gabriel said at least P500 million is needed to construct a dike that will protect the entire town from floods.

He said the national government only allotted P49 million for the project.

“Kailangan magkaroon ng complete dike para sumangga sa Manila Bay, at para hindi na rin mapinsala ang Valenzuela,” Gabriel told ANC.

The mayor also appealed for relief goods for his constituents.

“Right now we really need relief goods and [napakahirap] marakating sa amin at wala pa pong nagbibigay ng tulong sa amin kundi sa sariling kayod ng munisipyo,” he said.
