Thousands flee as bushfire hits Albay
MANILA – Thousands of families fled their homes in Rapu-Rapu, Albay due to bushfire.
Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) chief Cedric Daep said Governor Joey Salcedo has ordered the evacuation of about 2,500 families near the site of the bushfire.
Daep told ANC that as of Monday morning, the fire was already just a kilometer away from the residential portion of barangays Morocoboran and Mananao.
Air Force helicopters equipped with buckets have been deployed to contain the fire.
Authorities suspect that kaingin (slash-and-burn) practice caused the fire. Daep said the abundance of dry leaves in the mountainous portion of the town following the onslaught of typhoon ''Glenda'' was aggravating the situation.
