DAVAO CITY – Even though they are far from Manila where the actual funeral mass and burial procession for the late President Corazon Aquino was being held, thousands mourned the passing of the country’s democracy icon.

Aquino’s supporters thronged the Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague and attended the mass offered for the late president.

A couple even travelled two hours from Tagum City in Davao del Norte to attend the special mass.

Others brought and offered yellow flowers.

San Pedro Cathedral was also filled during a mass also offered for Aquino. Many students from Ateneo de Davao University were seen attending the mass.

Soldiers from Camp Panacan also expressed their condolences to the family of Aquino and released yellow balloons to the sky.

At Rizal Park, throngs wrote their messages thanks to the contributions of Mrs. Aquino. Some were even seen crying while writing their messages.

“We love you Cory.”, “You're the best president” and “Salamat sa aming tinatamong demokrasya” were just some of the messages written for the late former president.

The messages would reportedly be brought by city officials to the members of the Aquino family.

At the Agdao public market meanwhile, many tied yellow ribbons and hung yellow cellophanes on their stalls.

Many residents meanwhile were glued on their television watching the live coverage of the funeral mass and the procession to Manila Memorial Park where Aquino’s remains are set to be buried.

Some malls had also installed wide-screen televisions so customers can view the live coverage.

Even in these public areas, some were seen crying unashamedly while watching the events shown on the wide screen TVs.

The streets of the city reportedly only had not that much vehicles.

Davao City has been one of the bastions of Mrs. Aquino’s support especially when she decided to take from her slain husband, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., the cudgels of fighting the regime of then strongman President Ferdinand Marcos and ran in the 1986 snap elections. Report from ABS-CBN Southern Mindanao
