10 miners killed, 3 more feared dead in Baguio landslides
MANILA - Ten small scale miners were confirmed killed and 3 more were waiting to be retrieved from a mining camp hit by landslides in Baguio City, a police official said Saturday.
Senior Superintendent Nestor Bergonia, Baguo City police chief, said the 10 miners were from a landslide-hit mining camp of the Emerald Mountain Explorers Association Inc. in Sitio Paltikan, Barangay Kias.
Two of the miners died at the Baguio City General Hospital while the other 8 were already lifeless when retrieved from the mining site, Bergonia said.
He said three more miners, who are feared dead, remained trapped at the landslide site.
Bergonia said retrieval operations were temporarily halted due to fears of more landslides.
Six miners had been rescued alive from the site, the local police chief said.
The landslides occurred between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday while typhoon Kiko (international codename: Morakot) was battering a big part of northern Luzon.
The National Disaster Coordinating Council said at least four landslides occurred in Baguio City at the height of the typhoon Kiko.
Three siblings also died in one of the landslides.
The NDCC's typhoon death count was initially placed at 10 on Saturday, while news reports said 11 have died from the typhoon, including three European tourists in Mount Pinatubo in Capas town, Tarlac province.
