MANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm “Helen” dumped rains in Cagayan from Tuesday night until Wednesday morning, triggering floods which submerged hectares of cornfields.

The Pinacanauan River overflowed, submerging Tawi bridge in raging floodwater.

The bridge connects 5 barangays of Peñablanca.

A landslide also hit the provincial road of Peñablanca while part of a mountain in Barangay Parabba collapsed.

The Public Works and Highways Department immediately conducted clearing operations to allow motorists to pass.

Over in Barangay Patagueleg, hectares of cornfields have turned into virtual rivers.

“Wala tayong magagawa dahil ganyan naman, may tama ang panahon natin. Hindi natin maiiwasan,” said farmer Nelson Misador.

Officials of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council are still assessing the cost of damage to agriculture.

In Tuguegarao City, the Pinacanauan Overflow Bridge is also impassable.

State weather bureau PAGASA has raised a flood alert for the town of Alcala.

Meanwhile, authorities arrested 14 males who violated the liquor ban in Isabela.

Drinking liquor during storms is prohibited in the province so that residents are able to think and act properly amid a calamity.
