MANILA, Philippines - Police have filed charges against the driver of the Eso-Nice bus that plunged into a deep ravine on Wednesday, leaving 41 people dead.

Meanwhile, police have released the bus' conductor, John Patrick Flores, after he was absolved by the provincial prosecutor from the charges.

The bus carrying 49 people had just left the Baguio City en route to San Fernando City, La Union when its brakes failed. The bus plunged into a deep ravine in Sablan town, Benguet province.

While the bus was sliding violently down the slope, it crashed into a house.

The local police said that it has finished compiling bus accidents that happened in Benguet province since January to June this year.

In 35 bus accidents, 116 people were injured and 7 were killed.

Meanwhile, police said that victims in these vehicular accidents should file charges against the operators.

The provincial office has also started making an inventory of vehicular accidents in the province that happened 3 to 5 years ago in compliance to President Benigno Aquino III's directive.

The result of the inventory will be submitted to the Department of Transportation and Communications for study and recommendations. -- Report from Gretchen Malalad, ABS-CBN News
